The Maritime Development Center in Norfolk, VA is establishing a specialized welding development center that provides practical, industry-focused training for in-demand careers. We will prioritize serving disadvantaged youth and non-violent offenders in our community, giving them valuable job opportunities and a pathway to stable employment. Our program design integrates classroom instruction with on-the-job training, enabling students to gain real-world experience under the guidance of experienced educators, skilled tradespeople, and industry leaders. Through hands-on learning and advanced equipment, we will prepare competent welders to meet workforce needs and secure meaningful employment.
Courses

Programs will cover various welding processes, including Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW), Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW/MIG), Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW/TIG), and Flux-Cored Arc Welding (FCAW). The course's intention is to combine classroom instruction with hands-on shop experience, emphasizing safety, technical skills, and practical application.

To meet the needs of employers and career changers, MDC will provide accelerated boot camp and fast-track courses. These intensive programs are designed for rapid skill acquisition and job placement, making them ideal for company new hires, veterans transitioning to civilian careers, and individuals seeking immediate employment.

MDC will collaborate with local businesses and industry partners to deliver customized welding training for their employees. Training can be provided on-site or at MDC facilities, and is tailored to meet specific organizational needs, such as upskilling, cross-training, or meeting regulatory requirements.

For experienced welders and alumni, MDC will offer continuing education courses to support career advancement. Topics will include advanced welding techniques, welding inspection, blueprint reading, and preparation for specialized certifications.
